What is Physiotherapy

“Physiotherapy helps to restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability. It can also help to reduce your risk of injury and illness in the future” NHS UK.

Physiotherapy is a form of hands on treatment that uses a range of techniques in the treatment, rehabilitation and management of musculoskeletal pain syndromes including sporting injuries.  Physiotherapy treatment often includes soft tissue work to the affected muscles, ligaments and tendons. In addition, Physiotherapists mobilise the joints to help improve and restore mobility and function, and prescribe exercises to maintain and prevent re-injury.

If you are preparing for a sporting event or competition, physiotherapy can help improve your functional range of movement reducing the chances of injuries occurring. Physiotherapists will work with patients to prevent loss of mobility trying to ensure that the patient is fit and well, by trying to make a healthier and more active lifestyle.

What is the difference between a Chiropractor & Physiotherapist?

Both fall under the umbrella of ‘manual therapy’. Chiropractors specialise in the spine and the nervous system.  They use a diversified range of techniques, such as mobilisation/manipulation of the spine and surrounding areas, including the neck and hips, where the technique is called adjusting/manipulation, whereas a Physiotherapist tends to work more on soft tissue techniques to ligaments, tendons and muscles. Both types of treatment include rehabilitation exercises however, Physiotherapists tend to focus more on this to include stretch, strength & stability exercises.

At The Lansdown Clinic, the practitioners often work together drawing on each other’s strengths and experience within the specialities providing the best evidence based ethical care to each individual.

Chris is regulated by The Healthcare Professions Council and his number is PH97802.

His Insurance is registered with The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
