We all do it every January; promise ourselves this is going to be the start of a new you, starting with eating healthy and being more active. Whether that is a small change like going for a walk around the block a few times a week, or pledging yourself to a gym membership it is important to make sure you’re looking after yourself during activity.
If you’re taking up something like running or classes at the gym it is essential you wear appropriate footwear. The use of incorrect footwear can lead to long term injuries, so ensure your trainers are proper running/exercise trainers rather than “fashion” trainers and are laced up securely. If you are a regular runner it is important to ensure your footwear is not over worn and therefore not providing the relevant foot support and cushioning. It is recommended to replace your running trainers every 12-18months.
Whether you’re an exercise novice or someone more experienced, I cannot stress enough how important warming up and cooling down pre and post exercise is. Warming up prepares your muscles and joints for what you are about to partake in and helps to prevent injury; and cooling down encourages the removal of lactic acid from your muscles to help prevent you from aching too much the next day!
Injury is a part of sport, something that happens to even the professionals and although it is difficult not to get disheartened by it, getting the right treatment early on will determine how long you are out of action for. So, if you do pick up a slight injury, instead of the normal mentality of “oh it will get better” it is best to get professional advice and treatment that can help you get back to your sport sooner rather than later.
