CHIROPRACTIC & SPINAL REHAB

What is Chiropractic and what are the benefits?

Treatment techniques vary between chiropractors. Although they are skilled in a range of therapeutic approaches, chiropractors are perhaps best known for spinal manipulation, a safe and highly effective form of treatment for spinal disorders. Manipulation involves the application of a fast, specific manual thrust to a restricted joint, usually in the spine. It has been shown in independent research trials to be highly beneficial for patients suffering with back pain and and has been recommended in draft guidelines published by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

The Lansdown Clinic is one of the relatively small number of chiropractic clinics in the country to offer spinal rehabilitation. Its on-site gym offers supervised active care programmes to build spinal strength, stamina and endurance. This innovative approach reflects modern developments in chiropractic and medical approaches to back pain.

WHAT WE DO

REHABILITATION OF the SPINE

The Lansdown Clinic has a dedicated gym for rehabilitation of the spine and joints. The rehab programme is designed to improve strength, stamina, balance and co-ordination, promoting self-management of chronic low back disorders.

Our rehab sessions are run by Lynne Gardiner who will assess and create rehabilitation programmes for individuals. Participants are shown how to effectively exercise and promote confidence in their physical capabilities. Each programme is tailored to the individual dependent on ability, and all members of our team liaise to ensure the best outcome for the participant.

The National Institute of Clinical Excellence states that treatment of spinal pain should include exercise prescription. Research from clinical trials has shown that outcomes (including pain and satisfaction) improved during 12 weeks of supervised exercise for patients suffering with chronic low back pain.

Our ultimate aim is to include patients as an active participant in their care programme, empowering them to have confidence in their physical abilities, and to reduce episodes of low back pain.

FAQs and Booking

How do chiropractors treat?

Chiropractic is a package of care rather than any one specific treatment. They are particularly skilled in spinal manipulation which is learned over a four year period, but this is by no means the limit of chiropractic treatment.

Chiropractors at The Lansdown Clinic are trained in Dry Needling, a form of clinical acupuncture that can be used as part of treatment. They are also trained in other soft tissue techniques such as deep tissue mobilisation, stretching and specific exercise programmes.

The modern management of spinal conditions also incorporates active care programmes and our chiropractors are the referring practitioners for our gym-based supervised spinal rehabilitation courses, designed to improve long term strength, stamina and endurance and reduce the likelihood of further relapses.

What can I expect on the first visit?

Chiropractors are skilled at diagnosis and treatment is only commenced after a full case history and physical examination has been undertaken. Sometimes it is necessary to refer for MRI scanning for a more detailed investigation of the spine and soft tissues, or other imaging. The Lansdown Clinic has links to MRI and X-ray units in Cheltenham, providing a prompt and affordable service.

Training for CHIROPRACTORS

Chiropractors are highly trained. The Chiropractors at The Lansdown Clinic are graduates of two of the leading Chiropractic educational institutions: the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic and the Welsh Institute of Chiropractic.

The Lansdown Clinic is committed to lifelong training and is an approved training centre for new graduate chiropractors. We host local post-graduate faculty meetings to share knowledge and improve our clinical care and meet regularly as a team to discuss challenging cases and pool our skills and experience.

Regulating chiropractors

By law, chiropractors must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council, the statutory body which sets standards, protects patients and promotes the profession. In addition, all chiropractors at The Lansdown Clinic are members of the British Chiropractic Association, the longest established professional association in the UK.
